Insulation & Ventilation

Keep the insides of your home healthy and ready for anything!

Insulation

Thermal insulation in buildings is an important factor to achieving thermal comfort for its occupants. Insulation reduces unwanted heat loss or gain and can decrease the energy demands of heating and cooling systems.

Blown-in insulation increases the comfort of your home by neutralizing humidity and drafts and usually brings the largest return on investment.

The effectiveness of an insulation material’s resistance to heat flow also depends on how and where the insulation is installed. For example, insulation that is compressed will not provide its full rated R-value. The overall R-value of a wall or ceiling will be somewhat different from the R-value of the insulation itself because heat flows more readily through studs, joists, and other building materials, in a phenomenon known as thermal bridging. In addition, insulation that fills building cavities densely enough to reduce airflow can also reduce convective heat loss.

Ventilation

Proper ventilation can help prevent damage and premature aging caused by moisture in the winter and excess heat in the summer.

  • Help allow outside air to flow naturally upward and out of attic
  • Promote a cool, dry attic
  • Help prevent moisture from becoming trapped in insulation, structural wood, shingles and roof deck
  • Help prevent rotting, mildew, drywall damage, peeling paint and warped siding
  • Provide year-round performance for consistent ventilation without energy consumption.

In order to create a consistent flow of cool, dry air through your attic, you need to make sure the air has a way to come in and go out: intake and exhaust. For a roof, intake is usually achieved through eave and soffit vents, while exhaust is achieved through vents in the gables, deck or ridge. It’s important there is a balance between the intake and exhaust ventilation to help ensure air flows smoothly and efficiently.
